The tranquil town of Langebaan, situated on a huge lagoon on the West Coast of South Africa has a fascinating history going back hundreds of years that includes the Khoikhoi Strandlopers, German, French, Dutch, English, Afrikaans and even an American Civil War connection. The town is about 75 minutes’ drive from Cape Town and boasts some of the best kitesurfing in the world, particularly over the summer months of November to February, with international and local kite surfers enjoying the daily southeaster. From March, the quiet lagoon beaches and town provide a relaxing atmosphere for a quiet break. Kayaks, surf skis, surfers, paddle boards and all sorts of water sports take place on the lagoon throughout the year. And of course, Langebaan is a perfect base from which to explore the world-famous west coast and Namaqualand wildflower display from the middle of August through to the end of September.
